Saudi Arabia employs roughly 700,000 Nepali workers β€” the largest Nepali workforce in any single foreign country. Vision 2030 mega-projects (NEOM, Red Sea, Diriyah, Qiddiya) are driving sustained demand across skilled trades, construction, hospitality and services. This guide covers the Saudi work visa process from a Nepali worker''s perspective.

Why Saudi Arabia matters now

Three trends:

  • Vision 2030 spending: NEOM, Red Sea Project, Diriyah and Qiddiya are committed mega-projects creating 30+ year construction timelines.
  • Labour reforms (2021): workers can change employers after first contract or after one year without sponsor permission β€” a significant move away from old kafala restrictions.
  • Wage Protection System (Mudad): mandatory bank-transfer salary payment, monitored by the Ministry of Human Resources. Reduces salary-withholding risk.

Sectors hiring Nepali workers

Construction & infrastructure

The largest category by volume. NEOM in Tabuk province is a 30-year mega-project requiring 100,000+ workers at peak. Mason, formwork, scaffolding, finishing, site labour. Typical salary: NPR 50,000–110,000/month with free accommodation, food and transport.

Hospitality

Riyadh, Jeddah and Red Sea coastal resorts. Waiter, housekeeping, kitchen helper, room attendant. Typical salary: NPR 55,000–130,000/month.

Skilled trades (welder, electrician, plumber, AC technician)

Highest-paying segment. Saudi Aramco contractors and infrastructure mega-projects pay 6G welders NPR 180,000–260,000/month. AC technicians and HVAC specialists in similar range.

Driving

Heavy and light vehicle drivers across Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam. Typical salary: NPR 60,000–130,000/month with free accommodation.

Healthcare

Nurses and paramedical staff for Vision 2030 hospital network. Requires NMC registration and Saudi Health Authority (SCFHS) verification. Higher entry barrier but salary NPR 180,000–350,000/month.

The Iqama Work Visa process

Saudi work visas are issued under the "Iqama" system β€” a combined work permit and residency permit. The process from Nepal:

  1. Employer in Saudi obtains a Block Visa from the Ministry of Human Resources, authorising the recruitment of foreign workers.
  2. Demand letter is issued and attested via the Saudi embassy in New Delhi (currently no resident Saudi embassy in Kathmandu), then by MoFA Nepal.
  3. DOFE pre-approval is filed in Nepal β€” typically 5–10 working days.
  4. Vacancy is announced and the agency screens candidates.
  5. Selected candidates complete GAMCA medical, document attestation, biometric fingerprint enrolment (at Saudi consulate VFS centre).
  6. Visa stamping at the Saudi consulate.
  7. Pre-Departure Orientation, labour permit, flight.
  8. On arrival in Saudi: employer registers worker for the Iqama (residency card), issued within 90 days.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saudi Arabia safe for Nepali workers?+

Yes β€” provided you go through a DOFE-licensed agency with a written contract under the 2021 labour reforms. The Wage Protection System (Mudad) ensures salary is paid via monitored bank transfer. Employer change is now permitted after first contract. Avoid free-visa-without-DOFE arrangements.

What's the difference between Iqama and Block Visa?+

Block Visa is the employer's authorisation from the Ministry of Human Resources to recruit foreign workers β€” issued before any specific worker is named. Iqama is the residency card issued to you personally after arrival in Saudi. The Iqama is your day-to-day ID and proof of legal work.

Can I change employers in Saudi after arriving?+

Yes β€” the 2021 labour reforms allow employer transfer after first contract completion or after 1 year, without needing No Objection from the original sponsor. This is a major improvement over the pre-2021 kafala restrictions.

Does Saudi require Arabic language?+

Workplace Arabic for blue-collar roles is minimal and learned quickly on the job. White-collar and customer-facing roles often require basic Arabic, which is taught through employer-provided training. Daily-life Arabic is helpful but not mandatory in major cities.

What if I get sick in Saudi?+

Medical care for work-related injury/illness is the employer's responsibility under Saudi labour law. Most reputable employers also provide private health insurance covering routine care. Plus you have FEPB welfare-fund coverage from Nepal. Always carry your Iqama and welfare-fund receipt.
