Overview

Working in Qatar — what you need to know

Qatar became a defining chapter in Nepali labour migration. The construction boom of the 2010s brought hundreds of thousands of Nepali workers to Doha, and the legacy infrastructure — stadiums, metro lines, the Lusail and Al Wakrah urban expansions — continues to demand maintenance and operations staff. Post-World Cup, Qatar's economy is diversifying: the North Field LNG expansion, luxury tourism, and financial services are all hiring. The 2020 kafala reforms — abolition of exit permits, introduction of minimum wage, and portability of the work permit — transformed Qatar into one of the more worker-friendly Gulf destinations. Our placements are fully registered with DOFE and the Ministry of Labour (MOL) Qatar, with all contracts reviewed by our legal team.

Accommodation and food are typically provided in Qatar, allowing workers to save 50–65% of gross salary. A construction worker on QAR 1,400/month can remit NPR 25,000–30,000 monthly. Skilled trades (electrician, plumber, QC inspector) on QAR 2,500–4,000 can remit NPR 55,000–90,000 monthly.

Visa & DOFE process

Step-by-step: Nepal to Qatar

Qatar deployment takes 30–50 days from selection: DOFE pre-approval (7–10 days), GAMCA medical (2–3 days), Qatar MOL contract verification, embassy visa stamping (7–14 days), and a mandatory pre-departure orientation (1 day). Qatar requires a biometric fingerprint and eye-scan on arrival. Our airport-coordination team sends workers from TIA with full travel kits.

Worker rights and legal protections in Qatar

Labour law protections

Qatar's 2020 labour reforms were among the most significant in Gulf history. Exit permits were abolished — you can leave Qatar without your employer's permission. A statutory non-discriminatory minimum wage of QAR 1,000/month (≈ NPR 37,000) applies to all workers, complemented by food allowance (QAR 300) and housing allowance (QAR 500) if not provided in-kind.

The Wage Protection System (WPS) covers all workers. Workers can change employers after the first year without penalty under the new law. The Workers' Support and Insurance Fund provides compensation for wage theft.

The Nepal Embassy in Doha runs a dedicated labour-welfare unit for Nepali workers.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about working in Qatar

Is it safe for Nepali workers to go to Qatar?+

Yes — provided you go through a DOFE-approved agency like Glocal Workforce Nepal. Your contract must be attested by both governments, your Labour Permit issued before departure, and you must attend the Pre-Departure Orientation. Avoid anyone offering free-visa or free-ticket deals without DOFE registration — these are the primary fraud vector.

What type of visa do Nepali workers need for Qatar?+

The standard visa type is the Work Visa. Your employer initiates the visa process by submitting a demand letter to the relevant authority in Qatar. Glocal Workforce Nepal handles the embassy attestation and visa stamping after DOFE pre-approval.

How much does it cost to go to Qatar from Nepal?+

Total deployment cost depends on the destination and role. All legitimate costs are within DOFE-approved limits: typically NPR 70,000–150,000 covering agency fee, medical examination, DOFE service charge, visa fee, and pre-departure orientation. Use our DOFE Fee Estimator for an itemised breakdown, or contact us directly for a quote.

What documents are required to work in Qatar?+

Standard requirements are: valid passport (minimum 6 months remaining validity beyond your contract end), recent passport photos (4 copies), academic/trade-test certificates, CV, and GAMCA-approved medical fitness certificate. Gulf countries also require a biometric registration on arrival. We provide a country-specific checklist when you are shortlisted.

How long is the flight from Kathmandu to Qatar?+

The flight from Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu to Qatar is approximately 4.5 hours. Direct flights operate daily on Air Arabia, Emirates, Flydubai and Nepal Airlines.

Can I change my employer in Qatar after arriving?+

Most Gulf countries now allow employer transfer after the first contract year without sponsor consent — a result of post-2020 kafala reforms in UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Kuwait and Oman have similar provisions under labour law. Your contract governs specific terms.

How do I send money home from Qatar?+

Major remittance channels available in Qatar include IME, Prabhu, Western Union, and MoneyGram, all supporting direct NPR transfers to Nepali bank accounts. NRNA (Non-Resident Nepali Association) in Qatar can advise on the best local options.
