Working in United Arab Emirates — what you need to know

The UAE is Glocal Workforce Nepal's single largest destination by placement volume. Our placements run continuously across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah. The Wage Protection System (WPS) guarantees salaries are paid on time by bank transfer; our team monitors WPS compliance for every placement.

Direct flights on Air Arabia, Emirates, Flydubai and Nepal Airlines run daily, keeping flight costs competitive. The UAE economy continues diversifying beyond oil: Expo City developments, luxury hospitality expansion, and growing logistics activity at Jebel Ali Port all drive demand for the construction, driving, hospitality, security and retail workers Nepalis excel at.

Visa & DOFE process

Step-by-step: Nepal to United Arab Emirates

UAE deployment typically takes 25–40 days: DOFE pre-approval (7–10 days), GAMCA medical in Kathmandu (1–3 days), UAE Embassy visa stamping (5–10 days), and a 1-day pre-departure orientation. Skilled trades such as welding, electrical and plumbing require a GAMCA trade test. Our team accompanies workers to TIA and coordinates with the receiving employer's UAE transport.

Worker rights and legal protections in United Arab Emirates

Labour law protections

UAE labour law grants all private-sector workers a written contract (Arabic with English translation), 30 days paid annual leave after one year, sick leave, and end-of-service gratuity of 21 days' basic salary per year for the first five years. Since 2021, workers can change employers within the UAE without sponsor consent once probation is completed. This reform ended the old locked-in kafala arrangement.

The WPS system means salary non-payment carries legal penalties: employers face licence suspension and fines. The Nepal Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate in Dubai provide labour assistance, emergency rescue, and repatriation support.

Nepal Embassy & emergency contacts

The Embassy of Nepal in United Arab Emirates provides consular services, emergency repatriation, contract-dispute mediation, and passport renewal for Nepali nationals abroad. Our workers receive the embassy emergency number in their pre-departure kit.

Glocal Workforce Nepal also maintains an in-country contact for United Arab Emirates who can assist with routine issues (accommodation, salary delay) before escalating to official channels.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about working in United Arab Emirates

Is it safe for Nepali workers to go to United Arab Emirates?+

Yes — provided you go through a DOFE-approved agency like Glocal Workforce Nepal. Your contract must be attested by both governments, your Labour Permit issued before departure, and you must attend the Pre-Departure Orientation. Avoid anyone offering free-visa or free-ticket deals without DOFE registration — these are the primary fraud vector.

What type of visa do Nepali workers need for United Arab Emirates?+

The standard visa type is the Employment Visa (Work Permit + Residency). Your employer initiates the visa process by submitting a demand letter to the relevant authority in United Arab Emirates. Glocal Workforce Nepal handles the embassy attestation and visa stamping after DOFE pre-approval.

How much does it cost to go to United Arab Emirates from Nepal?+

Total deployment cost depends on the destination and role. All legitimate costs are within DOFE-approved limits: typically NPR 70,000–150,000 covering agency fee, medical examination, DOFE service charge, visa fee, and pre-departure orientation. Use our DOFE Fee Estimator for an itemised breakdown, or contact us directly for a quote.

What documents are required to work in United Arab Emirates?+

Standard requirements are: valid passport (minimum 6 months remaining beyond your contract end), recent passport photos (4 copies), academic or trade-test certificates, CV, and GAMCA-approved medical fitness certificate. Gulf countries also require biometric registration on arrival. We provide a country-specific checklist when you are shortlisted.

How long is the flight from Kathmandu to United Arab Emirates?+

The flight from Tribhuvan International Airport to United Arab Emirates is approximately 4.5 hours. Direct flights operate daily on Air Arabia, Emirates, Flydubai and Nepal Airlines.

Can I change my employer in United Arab Emirates after arriving?+

Most Gulf countries allow employer transfer after the first contract year without sponsor consent — a result of post-2020 kafala reforms in UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Kuwait and Oman have similar provisions under labour law. Your specific contract governs the notice period.

How do I send money home from United Arab Emirates?+

Major remittance channels in United Arab Emirates include IME, Prabhu, Western Union and MoneyGram, all supporting direct NPR transfers to Nepali bank accounts. NRNA in United Arab Emirates can advise on the best local options.

Has the UAE's kafala system been reformed for Nepali workers?+

Yes. Since September 2021, UAE private-sector workers can change employers after completing the probation period without requiring the current employer's consent. Exit permits were abolished in 2018. These reforms mean Nepali workers are no longer tied indefinitely to their original employer, though your contract terms still govern your notice period.

What is the WPS and how does it protect my salary in the UAE?+

The Wage Protection System (WPS) requires all UAE private-sector employers to pay salaries via an approved bank or exchange house, creating a government-monitored electronic trail. If your salary is delayed by more than 15 days, the employer is automatically flagged and faces financial penalties and recruiting restrictions. This makes outright salary non-payment relatively rare compared to countries without such systems.
