Send money home smarter
Most Nepali workers abroad remit 50–70% of their monthly earnings back to Nepal. Small improvements in how you transfer can add up to significant savings over a contract.
Compare before you transfer
IME, Himal Remit, Western Union and bank wire transfers all offer different rates for the same currency pair. A 1% difference on NPR 100,000 is NPR 1,000 — worth the 2 minutes to compare.
Know your WPS payment date
Gulf employers under the Wage Protection System must pay salaries by the 10th of each month. Plan your transfers around this date and watch exchange rates in the days before, since large payroll flows can briefly move the NPR/AED rate.
Use the mid-market rate as your reference
The rate shown in this converter is the mid-market (interbank) rate — the fairest benchmark. Any remittance service will offer slightly less. If a provider's rate is more than 2–3% below this rate, look elsewhere.
Keep an emergency fund in local currency
Maintain 1–2 months of living expenses in your destination-country account before remitting. Medical emergencies, flight delays or contract changes can happen; having local funds avoids expensive last-minute currency conversions.
Common questions about currency and remittances
How current are the exchange rates?
Rates are fetched live from open.er-api.com, which updates from ECB reference data. They refresh each time you load the page or change the base currency. For remittance planning, always cross-check with your bank or money-transfer provider as they apply their own margins.
Why is the rate at my remittance provider different?
Remittance providers (IME, Western Union, Himal Remit) add a margin of 1–3% to the mid-market rate, plus a flat transfer fee. The rate shown here is the interbank mid-market rate — the best rate available. Your actual received amount will be slightly less.
Which currency do Gulf employers pay in?
UAE employers pay in AED (UAE Dirham), Qatari employers in QAR (Qatari Riyal), Saudi employers in SAR (Saudi Riyal), Kuwaiti in KWD, Bahraini in BHD and Omani in OMR. Salaries are typically paid monthly, protected by the Wage Protection System (WPS) in the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
How can I save money when sending money home?
Compare rates across at least two remittance services before transferring. Larger transfers often get better rates. Some services offer rate-lock features so you can send when the rate is favourable. Avoid sending small amounts frequently — flat fees eat into small transfers.
