Gross salary vs. take-home: what's the difference?
Gross salary is what your employment contract states — before any deductions. In most overseas placements, there is no income tax for Nepali migrant workers (Gulf countries are tax-free; European countries may deduct social security contributions).
Living deductions in this calculator estimate the portion of accommodation and food costs you pay yourself. If your employer provides free accommodation and free meals — which is standard for most Gulf construction, hospitality and driving roles — your actual savings can be 30–40% higher than the calculator shows.
Take-home / net savings is what you can realistically remit back to Nepal after covering your living costs abroad. Use this figure, not gross salary, when comparing offers.
Always ask your employer: Is accommodation included? Is food provided? Are utilities covered? Are there any deductions from salary for uniforms or equipment? Get all answers in writing in your contract.
How to plan your finances before you leave
- 1Calculate your break-even point
Add up the total cost of going abroad using our DOFE Fee Estimator. Divide by your estimated monthly savings to know how many months until you have covered your upfront costs.
- 2Set a monthly remittance target
Decide before you leave how much you will send home each month. Automate it through a bank transfer or remittance service (IME, Western Union, Himal Remit) to avoid spending it.
- 3Budget for emergencies
Keep 1–2 months of living expenses in a local bank account abroad for medical emergencies, flight changes or unexpected costs. FEPB welfare fund covers some expenses but not everything.
- 4Understand overtime rules
Many contracts specify a basic salary plus overtime at 1.25x or 1.5x. If your role involves regular overtime, your actual earnings will be higher than the basic salary on paper.
Common questions about overseas salaries
Are these salary figures guaranteed?
No. The figures are indicative averages drawn from Glocal Workforce Nepal's active placement data and publicly available wage surveys. Your actual salary depends on your employer, contract terms, overtime, and benefits package. Always read your contract before signing.
What are 'living deductions' in the calculator?
Living deductions represent your estimated monthly spending on accommodation, food and utilities if you are paying for them yourself. Many Gulf placements include free accommodation and food from the employer — in those cases, your actual take-home savings are substantially higher than the calculator shows.
Which countries pay the highest salaries for Nepali workers?
Japan, South Korea and the UAE generally offer the highest total compensation for skilled workers. Europe (Poland, Germany, UK) offers high gross wages but higher living costs. Gulf countries (UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia) combine solid salaries with employer-provided accommodation, making net savings very competitive.
Does experience really change the salary that much?
Yes. For skilled trades like welding, electrical work and construction, a senior worker with 7+ years of experience can earn 25–30% more than an entry-level worker in the same role. Trade certificates (CTEVT) and verified skill-test results also significantly improve your offer.
