Role Overview

What is a Construction overseas?

Construction work in the Gulf — the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Oman — has been the backbone of Nepali overseas employment for three decades. The region's extraordinary pace of infrastructure development, from highways and stadiums to airports and luxury residential towers, generates continuous demand for site labourers, masons, scaffolders and formwork specialists. Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 alone has committed trillions of riyals to new cities and mega-resorts, sustaining demand well into the 2030s.

Nepali construction workers are valued for their high-altitude experience, adaptability to heat, and the Gurkha-derived reputation for discipline and loyalty to employers. Entry-level labourers typically start at NPR 50,000–70,000 per month, but skilled masons, scaffolding specialists and site-safety-trained workers can command NPR 100,000–140,000. Accommodation, transport to and from the site, and in many cases meals are included in the employment package.

Singapore offers a distinct pathway: the Work Permit (Unskilled/Semi-skilled) route processed through the Ministry of Manpower. Singapore pays higher wages than the Gulf but has a stricter safety compliance framework — all workers must complete the Construction Safety Orientation (CSO) course. GWN maintains established employer relationships in all six primary destination countries for this role.

The Work

What does a construction actually do?

A detailed look at the day-to-day responsibilities and typical working environment for this role overseas.

Key responsibilities

  • General site labour — shifting materials, mixing concrete, cleaning
  • Mason work — blockwork, plastering, finishing
  • Scaffolding assembly and formwork installation
  • Following safety procedures (harness, helmet, boots)
  • Assisting skilled trades (electricians, plumbers) during their work
A typical day

Sites typically run 07:00–17:00 with a long midday break in Gulf summers. Mid-tier construction workers earn overtime past 8 hours. Most Gulf sites provide transport from labour camp to site.

What the trade test involves

Gulf employers typically conduct trade tests in Kathmandu through licensed testing centres. A mason trade test involves practical tasks: laying a sample course of blocks to a line, mixing mortar to correct ratio, and plastering a small panel to a smooth finish. Scaffolders are tested on component identification and basic bay assembly. Site labourers generally face a physical fitness check and a basic safety-awareness quiz. GWN provides two practice sessions with our in-house trade-test trainer before every employer visit.
